Varicocele
Varicocele Microscopic Surgery (MSV:Microsurgical varicocelectomy)
For varicocele, including cases being investigated for difficulty having children. Done under an operating microscope.
What is happening inside your body
A varicocele is a group of swollen veins in the scrotum, a little like varicose veins in the leg. The blood does not drain away properly and pools there. This can raise the temperature around the testicle, which is one reason it can affect the making of healthy sperm and cause fertility problems.
Varicocele is a common and treatable cause of scrotal discomfort and male fertility problems. Using an operating microscope allows a precise repair with a lower chance of complications.
Signs to look out for
- A dull ache or dragging feeling in the scrotum, worse after standing all day
- A soft lump that feels like a bag of worms, often on the left side
- One side of the scrotum looking or feeling larger
- Difficulty with fertility, found during tests for a couple trying for a baby
How it is treated
The swollen veins are tied off so blood drains the correct way. Dr. Sajjad does this under an operating microscope (a special magnifying microscope used during surgery). The magnification lets him find and protect the tiny artery and lymph vessels, which lowers the chance of problems and gives a cleaner result. It is a small operation and most men go home the same day.
What recovery looks like
-
First few days: rest, with mild soreness managed by simple pain medicine. Supportive underwear helps.
-
One week: most men return to office work and light activity.
-
Two to four weeks: avoid heavy lifting and hard exercise until cleared.
-
If the operation was for fertility, a sperm test is usually repeated after a few months to check improvement.
Common questions
Can varicocele surgery improve my chances of having a baby?
For many men, repairing a varicocele improves the quality of the sperm over several months, which can improve the chance of fertility. It cannot be promised for every man. Dr. Sajjad will explain what the surgery can realistically do in your case.
Why use a microscope for the operation?
The microscope magnifies the area so the surgeon can clearly see and protect the tiny artery and other small vessels. This precision lowers the risk of complications and of the problem returning.
Will I be put to sleep for varicocele surgery?
It can be done under general anaesthesia (asleep) or with the area numbed, depending on your case. This is decided and explained with you before the day of surgery.
